Where did my get-up-and-go go?

Ever have ‘one of those days’? I’m having one right now. In fact, I’ve been having one for more days than I care to admit.

You know the saying, “my get-up-and-go got up and went.” Yep! That’s what has happened to me.

So many things I want to do, things I have to do, but I’m lacking the drive to do them.  *sigh*  I keep saying I must be tired. Well, that’s true, I am tired, but it seems to be more than that. Perhaps a temporary change of scenery/location is needed as I just don’t seem to have the motivation to get my act in gear.

Noticeably, I didn’t post a thing here all last week. That’s not good. I have some wonderful books lined up to review here but I can’t seem to think my way through it – but I will, really! I also have books stacked up to read, some of those to review, but I’m plugging away at War and Peace. Sometimes my reading is just for me, which is necessary, and I am enjoying W & P; it’s just taking me forever because I interject other books along the way.

Of course, there is life and all that entails. A sweet acquaintance/friend passed away the morning of February 15, and after hearing about her I learned that my uncle passed during the night of February 14. Both were expected, but not quite that soon.

Have you suffered with the flu this season, or the cold virus thing that is pulling people down? I am trying to avoid it, but I think that may be a lost cause. Two of Dad’s caregivers have been sick, so I am here longer this time until they recover past the contagious stage. I am expecting to go home tomorrow. It’s a little difficult to avoid my beloved at home, though, who is also recovering from it. Astragalus, an herbal remedy which helps to improve immune function, could be my happy thought. 😉

We were hit with a blizzard last night and this morning. That mixed things up a bit. The power went off at 4:00 this morning at home – not here at Dad’s – so I’m glad I wasn’t there for that this time. My husband didn’t even try to get to work – roads were treacherous with wind, snow, ice – but instead he took care of things at home during the power outage.

I already asked if you have had the flu this season, and now I have a couple more questions for you:

  1. What do you do when your ‘get-up-and-go’ got up and went?
  2. Do you enjoy winter storms? how do you cope with them? and power outages?

Thanksgiving and being thankful

I’ve been absent.  Did you notice?

My blog ideas have run low. Unfortunately, I have not kept up my writing of story drafts for 12×12 in 2012, either. My Muse is a little weary, I guess.

I’m behind in reading emails, sending responses to things, reading other writers’ blogs.  But wait, there’s more …

Because of a fall that happened on Labour Day, and from which I’m still recovering, I’m going for laser treatments on my knee. It may be another month before the healing is complete, but now there is much less pain and I’m starting to sleep a little better – for which I’m thankful.

Can anyone out there relate to the following? …

When on my alternating weeks at home I have had such a very frustrating time with my internet service. We have Fibre Optics at Dad’s, but the phone company we deal with has not found a feasible way to even bring high-speed out my way, and the dial-up connection is painfully slow. How slow is it, did I hear you ask? So slow that I have nearly nodded off while waiting for pages (even here on my blog) to load.

True story! The longer I kept dial-up, the worse the service became. How long could you put up with that? I don’t know how I did it for as long as I did, but it had become such a point of stress for me that I finally said NO MORE!

We now have wireless internet – for which I’m thankful. It’s been all of one day, I’m already feeling better, and I LOVE IT! There was far too much stress the other way. My blogging, business stuff, emails, Skype calling, everything … had become such a chore, and with being a caregiver now, too, I was about to walk over the edge. I am bordering on the blues leading to depression, and something had to change. The Internet c0nnection I now have at home is much faster, which gives me breathing space. (If you know anything about stress, depression, anxiety .. you will understand about breathing space.)

What bothers me is I’m so far behind – according to my own expectations – and it seems my weeks at home are not long enough. I just settle in when it’s time to go again. But that is my life now, for as long as it takes, and we can still make this work – for which I’m thankful.

The air has an Autumn chill, the leaves are changing colour, the Fall harvest is being gathered, and here in Canada it is Thanksgiving weekend. Today is a truly beautiful day – for which I’m thankful.

To close, I’m including a few images captured this morning. I thought you might enjoy these wonderful signs of the season. Descriptions are below.

1. Morning fog rising off the river – a view from my deck
2.  A showing of colourful leaves above the river
3 & 4.  Cortland apples (for pies) – given to us yesterday by a neighbour
5 & 6.  Three varieties of squash from my parents-in-law’s and our garden
7.  Only sunflower that grew for me this year; seed dropped by birds in planter! Bloom’s end.
8. Leaves changing colour on a tree in our yard.

A little misery, a little excitement!, and something for you

 A little misery

Remember in my July 31 post I mentioned sore throat issues? yes, well … I went to the clinic the next day and it’s a good thing I did. Fever, laryngitis caused by inflammation, sore throat caused by infection — I needed medical help. The young doctor (aren’t most of them young these days – as in the age of my children? what’s up with that!) gave me prescriptions to start the healing process.

Two prescriptions, one was only one tablet. One. But it was powerful. The idea was to make me feel better by evening, which it did. The catch? The pharmacist warned me to not take it at bedtime or I wouldn’t sleep, so I took it after a necessarily late dinner (early afternoon). And did I sleep? Nope! Not much. I didn’t drop off until somewhere around 2:30 AM followed by howling, barking neighbourhood dogs rudely waking me at 3:00! I was NOT happy.

And I had a difficult time getting back to sleep. I didn’t do much more than restless tossing and turning between short naps after that, until I heard Dad get up all-too-soon. There ended my chance to wrestle illusive sleep into submission, until my respite arrived mid-morning for the one full day I have scheduled. Misery and I took advantage of that time.

It’s been a less than delightful week for me, health-wise, but it could have been worse. Maybe a week of rest at home and the round of penicillin will do the trick.

It’s also been hot and humid this week, but today we were blessed with refreshing, much-needed rain – a downpour with a glorious crashing thunderstorm. I really enjoy that particular drama of nature. At one point the sun broke through in the midst of the rain – so beautiful! It’s been too dry here this summer, not at all good for the crops, so today’s soaking was welcome.

Thank you for the whine time; I appreciate it.  🙂  Now for  …

A little excitement!

For those of you who enjoy the writing and creative successes of Delia Ephron – and hopefully you read my review of her new book The Lion Is In – guess what? Ms. Ephron has graciously agreed to an interview here on my blog! Yay! I’m a little excited. Well, okay, more than a little. I am squeal-in-excitement excited! She is a renowned, very talented writer and seems like such a nice lady – I am looking forward to the interview. Watch for that coming up soon. 🙂

and something for you

Yes, dear readers, there is something for you. Well, one of you. After you all get to read my interview with Delia Ephron, leave a comment and then ONE of you will win a copy of The Lion Is In from the publisher, Blue Rider Press. How great is that! The only drawback is that the publisher has stipulated the winner must not live outside Canada or the US. Please comment anyway, though, because I always want to know your thoughts and opinions. My blog has no boundary limitations. 🙂

What has your summer been like so far? Any miseries? Excitement? Surprises?

SPRING has sprung!

  Today is officially

A week ago our daughter and our young grandson were across the road flying kites, since it’s a great place for that with the wide open fields on a breezy day.  Our little guy was having a great time.  He hardly had to move and the kite was lifting off in the updraft.

It’s a sign of the coming Spring. Remember those days? 🙂

Here today it is a glorious 20º Celcius , which is 68º Fahrenheit – and it actually got a little warmer than that where my house is located.  We are having an early Spring in Nova Scotia! Hopefully the temperatures will not change back until late Autumn as the buds are beginning to swell on trees and shrubs.

Our daughter, out west in Alberta, says it’s not spring there! At -17º C, (which is 54.6 F if I did the math correctly) all she had to say about it was …    brrr   😦   phhht!

So —  to anyone, like my daughter, who is still dreaming of warmer weather … I hope it happens soon for you.

In the meantime —

I love Spring! It means that Summer is next and … I love Summer! 🙂

 HAPPY SPRING, everyone!

Did I say Spring? Welcome to Nova Scotia in March

I wasn’t going to write a post today, but something happened that is worth sharing. Something cold, white, and wintry.

Yes, I know that I said Spring was in sight. You can read my post here. The little snow we had was disappearing, then it rained, followed by warming temperatures, then … look at what happened during last night …

Yes, MORE snow! I have a ‘great’ young friend who would absolutely love this. 🙂 It is heavy wet snow, ideal for making snowballs and building snowmen.

For little dogs, on the other hand, it’s not so fun when it comes right up under the belly.

This is Sammy. I didn’t get a photo of him when he first went out, before the snow was cleared a little. He’s so short that he pushed snow. He didn’t leave tracks in the snow, he body-pushed his way through it so that he left one long trail. Funny little guy! 🙂 But he does love to try to run in it.

And then the birds needed some help …

so I refilled their feeders and put out a new ‘birdseed cake’ for them.

Tonight the snow is starting to settle, and it’s turning slippery as it is getting cooler. In a couple of days we will get warmer weather again. Yes, Spring is coming a little at a time.

Winter is so beautiful, but I am a warm-weather person.

How about you, which season do you prefer?

The heavens declare His glory! Do you enjoy thunderstorms?

If you live anywhere on the east coast from Port aux Basques, Newfoundland to Long Island, New York, then last night you would have experienced the most extensive and amazing light-and-sound show to occur in years. It began late in the evening, lasting for a couple of hours. I finally fell asleep so I don’t know when it ended, but oh my … what a glorious demonstration of power it was!

Now, I realize some of you may not appreciate thunder and lightning storms and did not find it to be fun, and to you I express my regret. Our daughter’s little dog, like you, was definitely not happy. But for me .. oh wow! I loved it.

I see such expressions of nature to be a taste of the power of God. A demonstration of the force of nature set in motion. When the lightning flashed and crackled overhead, lighting up the whole sky and earth, flash after flash – hardly one faded when another lit up in its place or overlapped the first – I smiled and exclaimed “oh wow! so beautiful!” .. and waited for the thunder it announced. Then as the thunder rumbled, boomed, crashed, rolled, I listened in awe as it was everywhere at once – both rumbling and echoing in the far distance and exploding right over my head, sometimes rattling the house. The rain came in a driving rush, pounding violently against the windows, easing off, pouring down again and again. It was a truly amazing storm.

For many people it was not very fun, waking this morning to no electrical power. I can relate to that frustration, having been robbed of that necessity too many times. There were many lightning strikes and I suppose I would not be as happy if we were hit, but it doesn’t change the awesomeness of it all.

I have loved thunderstorms for as long as I can remember, but I understand the fear that others have of them. When my children were small I determined that I would not instill that fear in them, but I did use caution. We would watch the lightning – from the safety of our house, never standing outside in it – and count the seconds before the clap of thunder to figure out how far away the storm was from us. Some storms were so close and loud overhead and the thunder would shake the house, so that a few times I sat my little girls down and we read aloud something interesting and fun to take some of the attention off the storm. It was not to teach fear but to show them to trust God and not worry.

One of those daughters during last night’s display drove with a friend “chasing” the storm and watching it from that perspective.  [Did I do a fine job or not?  hmm 🙂 ]

So, what do you think? Do you enjoy thunderstorms? Why or why not?

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows and proclaims His handiwork. – Psalm 19:1

For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse; – Romans 1:20
