Does fear control your life?

FEAR.

What do you think of when you hear that word?

From the time I was a small child fear was my constant companion. It hindered me in every way. Sometimes it got pushed aside but rarely did it let go. It has taken years for me to begin living without it taking over, and even yet I struggle against its seemed power in my life. I have come to believe that when fear is not of value it is a choice to be made.

FEAR IS A CHOICE.

Without going into a lot of personal grief about things not necessary to mention at this time, I want to direct you instead to an excellent post I found. Titled “Is Fear Driving You Forward or Dragging You Under?” it was written by Kristen Lamb  <—- so please take a few minutes to go there (just click on her name) and read it. She says it so well.

E. E. Cummings said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”

I’m still working on that. How about you?

Does music inspire you? (very funny videos)

My topic for today is music.

cool cat!(photo is of our white, blue-eyed cat, Scamper, whom we had for seventeen years.)

I enjoy music. Not all music, but likely most. When there is music playing I have a very hard time staying still. Music seems to speak to the depths of me.

Classical music is supposed to be good for the brain, especially good for the development of babies’ brains. I read that studies have found classical music is helpful during studying, doing homework, as background sound when doing other things. I find that particular music genre can simply be enjoyed without the listener being really intruded upon by it.

I came across this video that I think is one of the most hilarious things I have watched lately. Every time I view it – and yes, I like it so much I have viewed it multiple times, and will again – I either snicker or laugh out loud. It’s not only the involvement of the players but the audience reactions that get me every time. Take a look at this classical interlude and let me know what you think, but please remember to come back to see the next one I am including. Better yet, make it easier for yourself and just right-click so you don’t leave my blog entirely. 🙂

I understand not everyone appreciates music. There was a time it was considered to be evil-inspired on every level. But then on the other extreme there are those who enjoy not only listening to music, but playing an instrument AND singing along. That leads me into this funny clip which I think you will agree proves my point.

How does music affect you? Does it make you want to dance? Does it help your thought processes when you write?

How is your grammar? Take this quiz!

How’s your grammar? Ever wonder how you rate or what words still trick you?

question mark

I recently discovered a short grammar test. I’m always interested in knowing how I rate when it comes to proper grammar usage, so I took this twenty question quiz to test my skills. It is easy to do and I’m sure you will find it of benefit.

I didn’t get a perfect score, and would have been surprised if I had managed that. There are a couple of things that still trip me up. 85% isn’t bad, though. It makes me a Grammar Warrior.  🙂

Interested? Try it here.

How about testing your grammar skills, then please come back and let me know how you scored?

Wildlife out my window; reminder of chance to win a book

First I want to remind you to enter the draw, if you haven’t already, for a paper copy of the book by Erik Weibel. The Adventures of Tomato and Pea is a good one for that special child in your life.

Now I want to tell you about something fun. Today I glanced out the window and was surprised and delighted to see a young deer! She was making her way through the snow on the far side of Dad’s lawn, following the brook to the back of the property. Upon reaching a bend in the brook she stepped in and took a long drink of cold water. Having enough, she raised her head, looked around and crossed the stream to climb the hill on the other side. Soon after the deer had ventured by, a cock pheasant hurried along the brook and also made his way up the hill.

It’s always interesting here at my dad’s. One never knows what will appear in the brook or on the lawn, at or near the feeders, or just passing through. Besides deer and cock pheasants and their hens we have watched ducks, a fox, raccoons, hawks, many other birds including cardinals, a kingfisher, and grey herons.

The images I’m including were not taken from today’s sightings, but they are my own pictures. The first photo is one I took of a young deer in my own driveway one winter. The others were taken at Dad’s last summer.

I just wanted to share this since I hadn’t been able to post over the weekend.

A final memory jog … the draw for The Adventures of Tomato and Pea is tonight, Tuesday, March 11 at 6:00 EST. Please encourage a new author and leave a comment on the interview.

What wonderful sightings have you had this season?

How cold is it? Celcius vs Fahrenheit

It seemed to me that we have had a very cold winter here in Nova Scotia this year. The weather has been varying a lot but when it was cold it was COLD. And windy. And snowy .. yes, lots of snow, even with a bit of a break because of our January thaw. There are some who love it, but I .. I? .. not so much. This winter I bought myself a very good pair of snowpants so I can be comfortable when taking my puppy, Meyya, out every day. Even she, although loving to bounce around in the snow, cannot tolerate it when it’s crunchy cold under foot. She refuses to walk in it, trying to hold up first one tiny foot then another because it is way too cold for her. A friend of mine knit Meyya a sweater since she outgrew the little red one, and so she wouldn’t shiver as much, but the little socks I bought Meyya wouldn’t stay on, so she goes .. um .. barefoot? Well, without the socks. 🙂 (I know, I never thought I would try to put socks or boots on a dog but it was worth a try. And cute while it lasted — all of a few seconds.)

Having said all the above, apparently our winter is warmer than usual this year. *sigh* I guess I must just be getting older and don’t appreciate the season as much anymore. And it could be that since we got her on November 30 I was out every day but two because of Meyya, so I notice the winter chill more. I do remember years ago the snowbanks being very much higher than we get now, and more blizzards. It is true our climate is changing.

Talking about cold, I found this information I thought you might be interested in seeing. It shows temperatures in Celsius which is the metric measure Canada uses now, … well, most Canadians, I suppose. I still refer to old standard measure in most things since that’s what I grew up knowing, so I included the Fahrenheit, too, for comparison. Very interesting, I think.

2º to 3º Celsius is the average temperature inside a refrigerator. That’s 35.6º F.

-10º C to -20º C is the average temperature inside a household freezer. That’s 14º F to -4º F.

– 38º C is the freezing temperature of mercury. That’s -36.4º F.

– 63º C is the coldest temperature recorded in Canada. (Feb. 3, 1947 at Snag, Yukon) That’s -81.4º F.

– 79º C is the temperature of dry ice. That’s -110.2º F.

– 89.2º C is the coldest temperature recorded on Earth. (July 21, 1983, at Vostock II, Antarctica) That’s -128.56º F.

– 150º C is the average night temperature on the moon. That’s -238º F.

– 196º C is the temperature of liquid nitrogen. (perfect for freezing liquid metal Terminators)  That’s -320.8º F.

– 218º C is the freezing point of oxygen. That’s -360.4º F.

– 228º C to 238º C is the average surface temperature on Pluto, the planet. That’s -378.4º F to -396.4º F.

– 270º C is the estimated coldest temperature in deep space. That’s -454º F.

– 272º C is the freezing point of helium. That’s -457.6º F.

– 273.16º C is absolute zero. (meaning it is exactly the same in Fahrenheit.) All atomic motion comes to a standstill. In 2003, MIT scientists cooled sodium gas to the lowest temperature yet recorded – only a half-a-billionth of a degree above absolute zero.

Amazing, isn’t it? Yep! There’s no convincing me this all happened by chance.

How cold was your winter? What’s your favourite winter pastime?

Happy Valentine’s Day! Something for you

~~~~HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!~~~~
IMG_0048Aren’t these lovely? Every Valentine’s day I can count on a dozen roses from my beloved husband. What he likes is candy … chocolates or cinnamon hot hearts.
Today I have a blogging gift for you. There is a new blog on WordPress that I thought you might enjoy. It’s called Sokarsweet. (or click here to see it.)
Sokarsweet is my daughter’s photo blog. She and her family live in a lovely house on a beautiful lake with a gorgeous view. Her largest windows face west so she gets to see the amazing sunsets. I hope you will visit her blog and check out her photo posts.
Another thing I have done for you is to update my blog and fix a few broken links. My apologies for the bad links; I was dismayed when I discovered them. Now when you click on each book title listed under Book Reviews you are taken directly to the review here on my blog. I also posted them on some or all of the following sites, according to whether the book is listed or sold there: Library Thing, Shelfari, BookLook (if I got the book from them to review; BookLook used to be BookSneeze), Goodreads, Chapters.Indigo, Amazon.ca, and Amazon.com. I have many more reviews to do, and some author interviews are coming up, too.
Now I have a question for you.  Do you have a favourite quote or verse or Scripture for Valentine’s Day? Anything about love.
Here are a few good ones, including one verse of a catchy old song some of us will remember.
  • I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love. – Mother Teresa
  • Beloved, if God so loves us, we ought also to love one another. – 1 John 4:11
  • We love Him, because He first loved us. – 1 John 4:19
  • Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved as to love. – Francis of Assisi
  • I love you a bushel and a peck
    A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck
    A hug around the neck and a barrel and a heap
    A barrel and a heap and I’m talkin’ in my sleep
    About you, about you
    ‘Cause I love you a bushel and a peck
    You bet your purdy neck I do
What can you add to this list?
Happy Valentine’s Day, thanks for reading, and … Creative Musings! 🙂
