This is a quick post while waiting for the February 14th draw. (Read post of January 26.) I hope you have left a comment there to be in the running for Laura Best’s book Bitter, Sweet.
In the interim I am writing, and reading, and thinking about what I will say in my review of the book I read just last night.
Right now I want to mention something neat that happened yesterday. My husband and I were on our way home from church and dinner, and upon driving up the road to our house we slowed to turn into our driveway. But, we stopped instead because, to our surprise, there at the end of our driveway stood — a red fox! A beautiful, bright-eyed, healthy-looking fox! Unalarmed, it just stood there looking at us a few moments. Then, seeming to realize we were going to turn in, it calmly strutted out of our way and trotted up the hill by our yard. The people in front of us turned and drove back to watch this gorgeous animal, and another van also stopped when they realized we were watching something. The fox must have found an interesting little critter to its liking because not long after that it was on the side hill digging, with its back end up and head and shoulders hidden in the snow. Amusing. It mattered not to the fox who was watching.
Gotta love rural/country life! Here I have the privilege to see all kinds of wildlife, including eagles nearly every day, and also hawks, many other birds, white-tailed deer, foxes, coyotes, and other animals. Yes, I love God’s creation!

That is exciting, unless you have chickens. My sister-in-law had half her chickens eaten by one. Circle of life. We have lots of hawks too and of course hundrds of Canada Geese.

Ohhh Canada Geese. They are a welcome sight when Spring arrives here.
Years ago my aunt used to be able to watch her hen house from the kitchen window. One day she saw the fox that had been lurking around and causing trouble. Let me just say .. my aunt was a great shot and the fox didn’t do that again.
So nice to have you take a break from writing poetry and visit my blog. 😉

I did get a bit carried away on there, it gets addictive 😉 I’ve been working very hard on edits today to make up for it. The whole poetry thing has got me re-evaluating my manuscripts though, a new direction beckons. What genre do you write Lynn?

I didn’t think I could write a poem a day, but I surprised myself – and I saw that you had fun at it, too. 🙂
I am still finding my niche but my goal so far is to write for children – picture books, early readers, mid-grade maybe. But, I got a YA novel well underway during NaNoWriMo, and ideas for picture books during PiBoIdMo — so I am testing the waters in several areas. Plus, I like blogging.
I think I just enjoy writing. 🙂

Oh Awesome!! Occasionally we see turtles trying to cross the road. We have wild turkeys around our area too. And falcons, hawks, and owls galor! I am still waiting to see a bear hehe!
I live next to a moocow farm with horses. One day I ended up seeing what I thought looked like a squirrel but there was NO WAY that was a squirrel because it looked so BIG! Turns out it was a Fox Squirrel. 🙂 Oh, and I saw a bald eagle once!

Wow! A fox squirrel would be amazing to see. And I understand it is quite a thrill to see a bald eagle there. They are a common sight here, very majestic birds.

Country life can be so enjoyable.
I remember from my years in the country cycling past a field full of cows.
They’d all turn their heads and start mooing.
A little unnerving but funny at the same time.
I live in the town now but we do have an abundance of squirrels here

Every year, Spring till late Summer, cows with young are put out in the pastureland next to us. They are very curious, and both amusing and interesting.

I spend four months of winter in Palm Desert and we are blessed with mild weather so there is an influx of avian life. I rejoice in awakening to the songs of mockingbirds or the cooing of doves. Hummingbirds (lots of them) entertain us as they compete for the nectar we hang outside the kitchen window. Now and again we are visited by coyotes and road runners. Always a thrill although we take a golf club out when we walk the dogs at night just case there’s a hungry coyote on the prowl (never happened) so we could chase it away (not hurt it). In Reno we are in a semi-rural area and again, much wild life, many birds and horse pastures delight me.

We see rabbits (late in the afternoon/evening), a bazillion squirrels (really, they are plotting to take over something, I’m sure), birds galore and the occasional turtle. Matter of fact, when my oldest girl was 3yo (she is now 13), I had to call my FIL to come help move a gigantic turtle out of my front yard. It looked like a dinnosaur. Turns out, it was a Mississippi Alligator Snapping Turtle. I live NC. On a small side street in the city. No, I have no idea how it got here!
Oh – and we see hawks sometimes.

That is so cool! I can see that you enjoy where you live. We don’t have snapping turtles that big, but a sea turtle came into one of our bays years ago. It was really huge. Amazing … God’s creatures.
