A Christmas surprise!

It seems I am hardly at my computer these days, which is very unusual for me, so I have not been posting on my usual schedule. I can peek at my blog on my iPad, but doing much more than responding to comments is limited because my frustration level is quite high. The iPad just won’t cooperate!

Some positive things as this year reaches its close …

  • my sprained foot is healing so is much better now, still a little sore and I have to be careful yet, but it’s much improved;
  • my depression has lessened, and I am getting a B12 shot every three weeks to help with that;
  • I’ve started trying my hand at sketching again. So far I can’t say my efforts are anything to brag about but I might follow the advice of an illustrator I ‘met’ through PiBoIdMo and post my drawings on my blog – eventually … if it’s not too embarrassing;
  • I have many more story starters to work on, and I found that participating in Susanna Hill’s challenge was quite inspiring even though my story wasn’t chosen. Now to keep writing (I really need to develop a writing habit that helps with that);
  • I still have many books to read, several to review but I’ve decided to cut back on accepting books to review and may mostly write about the books I read of my own choosing as I have so very many in my stash find it hard to keep up with everything;
  • I have so very many delicious tempting interesting (or all those descriptions!) books in my stash to read for my own enjoyment and I can hardly wait. Oh, I sort of said that already.
  • We had the most wonderful Christmas surprise!

Our Christmas surprise …

Christmas week was my sister’s turn at Dad’s, but my husband and I stayed overnight Christmas Eve so she could go home to her own family for that night and Christmas morning. When she returned we went home and got the rest of our Christmas preparations finished, including cooking the veggies we were contributing to the dinner later in the day. Back at Dad’s I told someone I had a really good feeling about it this year, more peace and contentment, but I didn’t know why.

Twelve of us shared the main meal – which was exceptionally delicious this year – then two more of our family arrived which meant we could move into the next phase of our day … the gifts. We all were making our way to the living-room for that fun when behind me a voice said, “Is anyone going to feed me or do I have to get it myself?” I spun around and there stood our daughter who lives in Alberta!! She had come home to surprise us, and had told no one she was coming. What a fantastic surprise that was! It was so great having her join us, especially since the last six Christmases she has not been able to get home. We expected to FaceTime with her later, but this was MUCH better. 🙂 Hug break!! Well, after I let go of her.

After gifts exchanged with Dad and my sister and her family some of us enjoyed a variety of desserts. We learned a few years ago that it was more sensible to leave the dessert until after we’d been away from the table awhile. 🙂 After a major clean-up so it wasn’t all left to my sister to do alone, my husband and I and our girls and families headed to our place where we exchanged gifts – (I was thrilled when my daughters gave me a family ring with their birthstones and names on it) – and spent such a pleasant evening. All my family home for Christmas! Yay!  You can be sure I’ve been thanking the Lord for that.  🙂

Okay, now it’s your turn. What special thing happened for you this Christmas? What positive things do you have to share about (Please do!) as the end of 2014 nears?

Quiz: What magical creature are you?

Here it is Monday already! I missed blogging on the weekend, but I have a really, really good reason.

Friday at 3:00 PM my doorbell rang. When I went to the door who should be standing there but … my daughter who lives in Alberta!!  She came home for a ten-day visit, a surprise to everyone except her oldest sister who helped in the planning. 🙂  That’s neat because on her last trip home (in April) it was that sister who was the only one NOT to know she was coming since it was a surprise for her special birthday event.  What a lovely treat to have her home.  🙂

It was a busy weekend, including a family event at the cottage to welcome into the ‘clan’ my sister-in-law’s fiance’; their upcoming wedding is in October. It was after receiving the invitation to Sunday’s special occasion that my daughter started making plans to come home again. She had been blessed to get a promotion with pay increase at work which enabled her to make two trips home this year, the first time she’s been able to do that since moving to Alberta six years ago.

Sunday was a gorgeous day for family and feasting (including lobsters and muscles on the menu), and then my beloved and I went canoeing for a little while on the calm lake. I needed that.

So … all the above, including reading to review, and I missed blogging – but with good reason, don’t you agree?  🙂

Now, this post was originally going to be on the weekend and about this fun quiz I would like you to try. The question is: What magical creature are you?  I don’t know if I should tell you what I am according to that. 😉 Funny.

Do try the quiz and leave a message to share what magical creature you are.  🙂

Family fun and birthday surprises

Today was a day of activity … secretive activity.

My husband’s landmark birthday is on Wednesday, but a surprise birthday party was planned for today. He got busy doing yard work at my dad’s this afternoon, which put him out of sight of people going past our house to our daughter’s  where the party was being prepared.

Another daughter arrived and took Dad “for a drive”, and my husband and I went on to do our normal things before going home for my week there. We even ordered Chinese take-out as we usually do on the Sunday ending my week at Dad’s. (I didn’t change our routine because I didn’t want to make him suspicious.) While he was in the restaurant collecting our order, I talked with our daughter on the phone, so when he came out we had our story worked out to get him out there.

As soon as he got back into our vehicle I told him I’d been talking to our daughter and she needs him NOW at her place. Apparently, there is a leaking pipe in her yard (true) that is much worse and not getting any better (false), and she needed his help right away (false). He said to me he would have to get a shovel and his boots, so we stopped at home and left our meal and my puppy, and got his supplies. Fifteen minutes later we were driving down her long driveway. As we drove up over a rise he saw the cars parked in her yard. “What the frig is going on here??!!”, he exclaimed, while stomping on the brake. He looked at me sitting beside him trying to act innocent — and not very well by that time — and started backing up the car! So funny! He was totally bamboozled! It was great!

Sixteen of us were in attendance and oh! the delicious food! We gave him cards, small gifts, and a large one we had gone in on together for him. He kept expressing his amazement over not catching on to it, but I had done nothing to tip him off. Such success! Such fun!

And he deserved it.

Do you have any tales of surprises you have managed to pull off for someone?

Surprises, sacrifices and schedules

This is Holy Week in the Christian faith, the week of remembering Christ’s sacrifice for us. It is coming into a weekend of special services and celebrations, family dinners and reunions. I hope it is also a time of reflection for all God has provided for us through the Cross and His unfathomable Love, much more than is realized or that we can even understand.

This weekend is especially wonderful for me because last Sunday we were surprised by the arrival of our daughter who lives in Alberta. She showed up for a three-week visit, which is a blessing to this mother’s heart. For the first time in a few years we have all four of our girls home for a few occasions – one daughter’s birthday, Easter, Mother’s Day. I love it! And tomorrow morning we – and some other family members – are all going to the Good Friday service where I fellowship. That means a lot to me.

On another topic — Now that I have access to my computer only half the time, my posts are having to be scheduled when I can manage to prepare them – which explains why I got two posts up last week when I was not online, in case anyone was wondering about that. A Twitter pal noticed.  🙂  WordPress has this great feature where a blog entry can be scheduled to be posted whenever you want it to be seen. Gotta love that! The only problem is that I can’t reply to comments unless I am here. But don’t let that stop you! 🙂

I plan to soon get another book review up followed by an interview, and another one is already planned for early May as part of a blog tour. So, if you enjoy those then please keep checking back.

I’m trying to keep up between times spent with my dad, but not doing as well as I would like in the other things. Hopefully, I will improve. My time management skills are severely lacking.

So, how are you spending the Easter weekend?

And on the topic of time management, how do you pull it all together?

Delayed surprise!

This is my second posting today, but I want to tell you about my surprise.  Our yesterday got all turned around – the  way life happens sometimes –  so we forgot to pick up our mail.  When my husband brought it in early this afternoon … yippee!!  The book I won – A Black Tie Affair by Sherrill Bodine – had arrived in Friday’s mail!  It was postmarked Jan. 26, so took about 11 days to get here from Florida.   That’s not bad.

I am excited to read this book, which just became available January 1.   Sherrill personalized my copy for me and included a publicity photo of herself.  Also, in response to her note on an included postcard,  I will be writing to Sherrill to let her know her book has reached its destination.

The next time I mention A Black Tie Affair it will be to share my thoughts about it.  🙂

I won a book!

This evening I was in a writers online chat room, the same one I mentioned in my last post. Each Sunday evening they have a guest speaker invited to share with us there. Since I am a newcomer I have only attended two Sunday sessions but I am finding great information is being shared. At least, it is interesting to me.

As each chatter arrives, his/her name is written down by the moderator and at the halfway mark a name is drawn. Well, tonight my name was pulled out! I was so surprised! My prize? A copy of A Black Tie Affair by our guest speaker, Sherrill Bodine. How cool is that? 🙂

Have you read it yet?  Or any of her others?

Tonight I added another title to my list of books that I’ve read since Dec.  ’09. 🙂  I am also reading Gone With The Wind, a copy I have had here for years but could not get into until now.  I loved the movie which I saw in the theatre so long ago and now I’m really enjoying reading the story.
