Book Review: Out Live Your Life by Max Lucado – (not what I expected)

Awhile ago I joined BookSneeze.com and spoke for Max Lucado’s new book Out Live Your Life ... You Were Made To Make A Difference.   In exchange I am to write a review, post it here and on some place like Amazon.  So, here is my review.

Out Live Your Life

I am not sure what I expected – but this book wasn’t it.

Perhaps I thought Max Lucado would be offering something personal to me, telling me how to come out of blah living, rise up out of the occasional doldrums, and get a new and exciting perspective on life.  Instead he creatively reminded me of how good I have it in this part of the world, and how so many are lacking in the comfort things that this world offers.  He reminded me of my comfortable Christianity, and of the spiritually depraved, and of those who hunger to know God, and of those who dare to know Him in places where Jesus is not welcome.

Max challenged me to look beyond my supposed needs to consider once again the needs of others and what more I can do to help make another’s life a little more bearable.  I have often thought that if we each were to make a positive difference in one other person’s life – what an impact and growing influence it would have on our world.  Max gives many simple examples of how to do that, never straying far from the word of God.

So, even though this book wasn’t what I expected, it is more, and what I needed to read.   Max Lucado’s writing style doesn’t disappoint.  This book will take you beyond your own narrow space in the world and open to you a panoramic view that will broaden your horizons.  If you really pay attention, put time and thought into each chapter’s study questions in the back, and seek God’s direction for where your focus should be – you can out live your life.  In so doing you will find excitement through making a real difference in this world, one person at a time, in Jesus’ name.

  2. I haven’t heard of this book. Thanks for introducing us to it. Often times things are not as we expect them to be. It’s a wonderful surprise when it turns out that they are better. 🙂

  3. Ah yes, Lucado – one of my favs. 🙂 I have not yet read this one, though. Your post has interested me in reading it now, for over the past several years I have been faced with various tests, including financial ones, which have caused me to rethink ways of helping those “less fortunate.” The LORD has put upon my heart for many years the plight of others, but just when I thought I had already learned, He reminded me that I really do not understand, even through my own turmoil, the many needs of others. Not only are we to reach out with help for basic needs, but we must also remember the greatest need: Salvation. And not only must we reach out with the Good News so the spiritually poor can be saved and discipled in the faith, but we must also remember to give for their basic needs as well. That is loving our neighbor. Perhaps especially when we feel we are too overwhelmed with our own “roller coaster ride,” that is when we should reach out the most to those in need. Our LORD blesses us when we “consider the poor.” [Ps. 41:1] And though blessings are not the reason we should consider them, it is always good to reach out to them. That includes the times when we are going through our own storms, even if all we can do at those times is to pray, our merciful GOD will bless both the one praying and the one for whom she prays. This is quite a lesson, and not an easy one, learned by someone who has been the victim of the whims of the well-to-do crowd, but that’s another story. My LORD who sees every heart and every need continues to teach me about people, whether rich, poor, or anywhere in between. I look forward to reading this book, thanks to your thoughtful review.

    1. Thank you, Elisheva, for your well thought-out and well stated comment on this post. It is so easy to not see past our own needs, isn’t it? This book is a good reminder of what is beyond our personal little world. Max gives good examples of how to help others, so I am sure you will enjoy his book.

  4. I haven’t read this yet bu I have come upon a lot of good reviews about this book. I will get a hold of this soon. Max Lucado has written many books that has inspired and encouraged a lot of people. And this is one of them. My favorite is He Did This Just for You also by Max Lucado? It is an excellent way to introduce the gospel to our non-believing family members, friends and acquaintances. The book is recommended at http://booksforevangelism.org/. Maybe you can check out that site too! Great collection of books are listed there which can be really helpful.
